Academics / Specializations / Alumni Talk: Information Systems and Technology

students in library, computer labMy current job is as a research specialist for the Alexandria Digital Library, one of six federally funded digital library initiatives in the U.S. My areas of research and development are user needs analysis, user evaluation methodologies in connection with iterative design of the system, information retrieval design for networked collections, and information description methodologies including metadata design and integration, special services/tools for georeferenced systems (e.g., gazetteers), and the design of information representation tools such as thesauri and other terminology systems. The Alexandria Digital Library supports the use of georeferenced information - that is, any type of information that is linked to a location on the surface of the earth. Such locations can be described spatially with latitude and longitude coordinates and spatial operations (e.g., contains and intersects) can be applied for information retrieval. Another important dimension of the Alexandria collections is time - the temporal dimension. The challenge is to extend the technologies and methodologies of text retrieval to integrate the spatial and temporal dimensions and also image matching. To build user-centered information systems, it is also necessary to understand how spatial cognition works in the context of information creation, description, retrieval, and use. I work daily with the system designers, with implementation staff, with information science researchers, with earth scientists, with university library staff, and with users of ADL. I participate in the American Society for Information Science and various metadata and standards activities.
