Academics / Specializations / Alumni Talk: Public Librarianship - Management

a woman holding a folderThe life of a director of a public library may involve many different activities during any given day depending on the size and community of the library. Here are some of my typical activities as the Director of Northumberland Public Library. I attend monthly board meetings and develop quarterly reports for the board of Supervisors. I am also involved with volunteer management (we have over 100), staff management (one full-time library aide) as well as maintenance of the building and premises (includes plunging toilets and whatever else needs to be done!) I fix computers, check materials in and out, write press releases, and write a bi-weekly column for local paper. I also select and purchase books, videos, books-on-tape, magazines, supplies, and computer equipment. Some of my other duties include giving tours of library, speaking on behalf of the library, attending meetings at State Library and other places, and scheduling exhibits for display case.

Many scholastic and other opportunities were available at SIS to prepare me for my future career as the director of a small public library. Dr. Margaret Kimmel was a wonderful advisor who enabled me to take the courses best suited to my goals. My graduate assistantship with the Life Sciences Reference Research Institute taught me event organization skills, Web page design, and how to work with people to get things done. Working with Dr. Louise Su and Dr. Ellen Detlefsen helped me to learn about medical research and the organization of information. Dr. Sally Buchanan's preservation class prepared me to employ basic measures to maximize the shelf life of our library's materials. Father Stephen Almagno's Ethics class strengthened my inner self and enables me get to the "heart" of work-related ethical questions. My internship with Marilyn Jenkins was perfect - I interviewed about twelve library directors throughout Allegheny County. Learning and using computers and the Internet for just about every class and activity has prepared me for automating and "wiring" the Northumberland Public Library.
