The purpose of this paper is to investigate two emerging standards, the Network Computer and the NetPC. The scope of these standards is not clear. They overlap, but not completely. The Network Computer is targeted at the low end -- at users who run only a few dedicated applications. The NetPC is a mid-range machine, capable of running productivity applications.
Both standards are changing the way we think about computing and both are very capable and robust. Both are also more network-centric than the current PC standard. This paper will briefly discuss the similarities and differences between the standards and their respecive strengths and weaknesses.
