The Library and Information Science Program seeks
students with diverse educational and career backgrounds.
Applicants for graduate study must have earned a baccalaureate
degree from an accredited college or university with
a scholastic average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better.
Students who have not worked in libraries may elect to
do a three-credit Field
Placement during
which they perform professional activities in a library
or information center under the supervision of a librarian
or information specialist and with the cooperation of
a member of the faculty.

The documents required for evaluation of candidates seeking
admission include:
- statement of intent
- a completed application
- official transcript(s) of prior academic work
- three (3) letters of recommendation
- a nonrefundable application fee of $50.00.
Online
Application Is Available. The School of Information
Sciences only accepts applications through the ApplyYourself
system. This link will take you to

create an account on ApplyYourself in order to view,
submit, or download the most current versions of our

Admissions occur on a rolling basis throughout the year.
Some specializations have limited terms of entry. Please

Students are usually notified of acceptance or rejection
within three weeks of receipt of all transcripts, recommendations,
and completed application forms. See

on the Graduate Record Examination: for students entering

| The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for admission
into the PhD/LIS program only. The institution
number for the University of Pittsburgh is 2927. The department
code for Library and Information Science is 4701.

offered at two computer sites of Sylvan Learning Centers
in the Pittsburgh area. Contact either Edgewood Town Center,

Admissions Information for International Students

- TOEFL
It is a requirement that international students
MUST submit a TOEFL score along with their application
materials; please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy
or Consulate for information. The minimum acceptable
TOEFL score for students admitted into the School
of Information Sciences is 550 (paper-based), 213
(computer-based), or 80 (Internet-based). Once admitted,
students are retested for English proficiency upon
arrival at the University of Pittsburgh.
