Requesting a permission code for restricted classes

1. Restricted classes offered in LIS, IS, or Tele include those that require special permission from the instructor for you to be able to enroll. These include, but are not limited to:
--
Courses that are full
--
Courses offered outside of your program (area of study)
--
Courses for which you have not completed the prerequisites
--
Dissertation credits
--
Field experience
--
Independent study
--
WISE coursework (LIS only)

2. The self service registration system may not let you automatically register for a class that fits one or more of the conditions above. You will need to request a permission code from the Student Services office. The process for obtaining a permission code is as follows:
--
Complete the Permission Code Form as a paper form or online
--
Get the signature or an email of approval from the instructor of the class

If the instructor would like to send an email of approval, please ask him or her to send it directly to registration@sis.pitt.edu
--
Submit the form to the iSchool Student Services office. If you are submitting a(n)

Electronic form - send to registration@sis.pitt.edu

Paper form - place in the Registration & Enrollment mailbox on the 5th floor of the IS Building

3. This will prompt Student Services to email you a permission number. A permission number will typically be emailed to you within 2-4 days. Please allow for processing time when requesting a permission code!
--
A video outlining the steps for registering with a permission code can be found in the Pitt Portal.

Log into the Pitt Portal >> UNDER the Student Center Login, click on "Learn More." On the right hand side are several flash-based videos that demo the registration steps.

Please note:
--
The instructor is not obligated to sign if it is not appropriate for you to be taking the class.
--
For classes offered outside of the iSchool, you will need to request a permission code from the department offering the course.
--
You will need to put your PeopleSoft ID number (student system ID number) on the form. Here is how you find your PeopleSoft ID.

Holds - if you have an outstanding bill, never sent in your final transcript when you applied, etc., there may be a hold placed on your account that would prevent you from registering. Check the "holds" section of your Student Center (near where your "enrollment appointment" is shown). If you have a hold, you will need to contact whomever is indicated on the hold to find out what you need to do to release the hold.
