In 2000, we began a new research effort looking at analysis and design of highly distributed component based software systems. The goal of this effort is to explore the ways in which the WWW might be expanded and personalized using web services. Initial efforts in this direction were undertaken as a part of the CASCADE research effort. We then began to explore various client server technologies in support of these efforts. We played with J2EE from SUN and most recently have begun to play with E'SPeak from Hewlett Packard. In September of 2000, with a small gift from HP, we began the development of an E'Instruction marketplace using the E'Speak software. In this process, we are exploring the systems analysis and design issues for these kinds of systems. An early explanation of some of the issues may be found at the E-Services web site.
