Policy on Admission to Restricted & Closed SIS Classes

Restricted Classes
If you are a student in the School of Information Sciences, you may register for any open IST or LIS class at any time during the registration and the drop/add period.If you are a student in another school or department, you may request permission to register for a SIS course and your name will be placed on a waiting list until the beginning of the drop/add period. If a space is available, you will be registered for the course.

Undergrads Only
If you are an undergraduate student in another school or department wishing to register for a restricted BSIS course, you must wait until the second week of the appropriate registration period, to pick up a Special Permission slip. You must then return the Special Permission slip to your current school to process your registration and/or an add/drop form. Call Mary Koller 412-624-5143 for further details.

Closed Classes
If a class is closed at the time you register, your name will be added to the waiting list in the order in which you register.If you are an undergraduate student, you should see Mary Koller in the BSIS office, 5th floor IS Building for permission or a space on the waiting list. The waiting list is given to the instructor of the course when the course begins, and the instructor will sign the Admission to Restricted/Closed Class Form if a seat becomes available at the first class. If you are a graduate student, you should see Tricia McFadden  in the Dean's Office (500C IS Building) for permission or a spot on the waiting list. You will be notified by email or by telephone if a seat becomes available before the first class. The waiting list is given to the instructor of the course when the course begins, and the instructor will sign the Admission to Restricted/Closed Class Form if a seat becomes available at the first class.
