PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Sally A. Buchanan is Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science, School of Information Sciences, The University of Pittsburgh. Her area of expertise is the preservation of library and archival materials, especially books, manuscripts and photographs and in particular the preservation management of research collections and recovery from disasters.

She received her MLS from San Jose State University in 1978. She was head of conservation at the Stanford University Libraries from 1979 - 1987 as well as adjunct faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, and Associate Director for the University Libraries at the University of Pittsburgh from 1988 - 1990 until she joined the faculty of SIS in 1990.

She has been active in professional organizations: American Library Association's ALCTS and RBMS; the American Institute for Conservation; the Guild of Bookworkers; Society of American Archivists; the California Library Association and the Pennsylvania Library Association. She has served as chair of a number of committees including one for the Library of Congress to investigate the viability of a Pittsburgh-based mass deacidification process.

For many years she has worked with UNESCO to bring preservation and disaster recovery to the library and museum collections of developing nations. She serves as a consultant to a number of private individuals as well as businesses.

Ms. Buchanan has written extensively about preservation for professional journals, for the Library of Congress, and for UNESCO. Her work has been included in the published works of many others as well. She was the chair of the committee which wrote a nd produced the preservation plan for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
