SAIS Tracks

SAIS Track within MSIS Program

Students pursuing the SAIS track within the MSIS program are required to fulfill the MSIS course requirements by taking a specified number of credit hours of coursework from the Foundations, Cognitive Systems, Systems and Technology and Elective areas. The highly recommended SAIS plan of study meeting the required MSIS course distribution is shown in the table below.

One S&T Elective

Note that the courses listed in the table are highly recommended. With approval from the department students may be able take courses other than ones listed above to meet a specific area requirement. With special permission, students may also be exempted from taking IS2000. In that case, another Foundations Area course is required.

Some of the recommended S&T elective courses are:

  • IS 2611: Algorithm Design
  • IS 2720: Geographic Information Systems
  • IS 2410: Introduction To Parallel Distributed Processing
  • IS 2160: Data Mining

Students may also use, with permission from his advisor, any course listed in the previous categories or the IA Elective pool or any other remaining courses in the Information Science program, including TELCOM 2200: Electronic Communications I and TELCOM 2510: US Telecommunications Policy, to satisfy the S&T/Cognitive Elective.

SAIS Track within MST Program

Students pursuing the SAIS track within the MST program are required to fulfill the MST course requirements by taking a specified number of credit hours of coursework from the Core Requirements, Human Communications, Management/Policy, Protocols and Design, and SAIS track cores and elective areas. The highly recommended SAIS plan of study meeting the required MST course distribution is shown in the table below.

Upon completion of a SAIS track, students will given certificates for CNSS standards 4011, 4012, and 4013. 

If a student has taken IS2820/TEL2813: Security Management to fulfill the elective requirement, the certificates for CNSS 4014 and 4015 will also be provided.

No provision is currently made for giving out separate certificates for each standard.

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in IA Studies

It is a program designed to provide a structured, personalized program of studies beyond the master’s degree. Designed for people who do not wish to pursue the PhD degree, it allows post-masters level students to specialize in the IA area and obtain the certification for three or all the five IA standards. Students can enroll in CAS and opt to finish 15 credit Basic IAS certificate course or the 24-credit advanced IA studies certificate course. The requirements of the the two options are shown in the table below

Students are required to complete 15 credits of coursework distributed as follows:

- Three SAIS Core courses (9)

- One Systems & Technology course (3)

Students are required to complete 24 credits of coursework distributed as follows:

- Three SAIS Core courses (9)

- IS2820 Security management (3)

- One IA Elective (3)

- Two Systems-Technology electives (6)

- One Capstone/Independent studies (3)
