SAIS Track in
MSIS or MST programs: Students eligible for a MSIS or MST
program can start their graduate studies by choosing the SAIS
track, once they are admitted to the general MSIS or MST program.
However, students pursuing the SAIS tracks are expected to have
a stronger background than the minimum required for the MSIS or
MST program. Hence, some students may need to take extra courses
to finish the SAIS track. The SAIS track is designed in such a
way that if a student chooses to discontinue the track at any
point, he/she can still finish the MSIS or MST degree degree program
with the courses he would have taken so far.
Both MSIS and MST
programs require a student to complete 36 credit hour coursework
distributed over different subject areas. Students who complete
the SAIS track will receive various CNSS certifications based
on which IA courses they have taken.
Pre-requisite for the SAIS track within MSIS
Students
wishing to pursue the SAIS track within the Master of Science
of Information Science (MSIS) program are expected to have completed
one three-credit college course in each of the following:
-
An
object-oriented programming language:
A course on data structures and file processing using an object
oriented language is optimal. C++ or Java is strongly recommended.
INFSCI0020: Programming Design and Software Tools is
recommended to meet this requirement.
-
Statistics:
A course covering data collection, descriptive and inferential
statistics is optimal. It should cover measures of central
tendency and variability, regression, correlation, non-parametric
analysis, probability and sampling, Bayesian analysis, significance
tests, and hypothesis testing. Either
INFSCI 1000: Statistical Analysis of Data,
STATS 0200: Basic Applied Statistics, or
STATS 1000: Applied Statistical Methods is recommended
to meet this requirement.
-
Mathematics: A college
level mathematics course, preferably in discrete mathematics
or calculus, is required. Any of the following courses is
recommended:
MATH 0120: Business Calculus,
MATH 0220: Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1, or
MATH 0400: Discrete Mathematical Structures. A college
level course in algebra and trigonometry is minimally acceptable.
Students
who lack some of the prerequisite courses may be admitted provisionally
pending completion of the prerequisites during the first or second
term of study. Any coursework that the student is asked to meet
as a condition of their admission must be completed with a grade
of B or better.
Pre-requisite for the SAIS track within MST
Students
wishing to pursue the SAIS track within the Master of Science
of Information Science (MSIS) program are expected to have completed
one three-credit college course in each of the following:
-
An
object-oriented programming language:
A course on data structures and file processing using an object
oriented language is optimal. C++ or Java is strongly recommended.
INFSCI0020: Programming Design and Software Tools is
recommended to meet this requirement.
-
Probability (a
3-credit course)
-
Calculus (a 3-credit
course)
Students
who lack any of the prerequisite courses may be provisionally
admitted pending completion of the prerequisites during the first
term of study.
Certificate
of Advanced Studies (CAS) in IA Area: Students with a graduate
degree in Information Science related field can choose to enroll
for a CAS program to pursue IA studies resulting in CNSS certifications.
The CAS-IA program is designed to enhance the skills of the information
professionals who wants to take a focused coursework resulting
in CNSS certifications. of the The DIST currently offers two options
within the CAS program:
-
Basic
IA Studies: This option requires the student to complete a
15 credits of coursework that includes the three core SAIS
track courses. Upon completion of the requirements
for this option, students will be provide certificates for
CNSS standards 4011, 4012 and 4013.
-
Advanced
IA Studies: This option requires the student to complete
a 24 credits of coursework that includes the three core SAIS
track courses and and IA elective and the SAIS capstone requirements.
Upon completion of the requirements for this option, students
will be eligible to receive all the five CNSS standards.
