Archival Studies at Pitt

Faculty

There is currently one full-time archives professor at Pitt, Dr. Richard J. Cox . The program hopes to hire a second full-time professor in the coming academic year.

Classes

Archival Studies is a concentration within the Department of Library Sciences program at Pitt. There are four required core courses for the Masters of Library Science (MLS) degree:
LIS 2000 Understanding Information
LIS 2001 Organizing Information
LIS 2002 Retrieving Information
A course in management
(Note: LIS 2220 and LIS 2221 are required archives courses and either will fulfill the management course requirement)


There are also five required courses in the Archival Studies concentration:
LIS 2220 Records and Information Resources Management
LIS 2221 Archives and Manuscripts Management
LIS 2222 Archival Appraisal
LIS 2223 Archival Access and Advocacy
LIS 2224 Archival Representation.


Additional courses are required to obtain the 36 credits needed to graduate. These are chosen in consultation with your advisor to fulfill your career goals.
