What is SAA?

SAA stands for Society of American Archivists, a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of archival theory and practice in the United States. Founded in 1934, SAA is considered to be one of the premier professional organizations in the archives field. The student chapter of SAA at the University of Pittsburgh was established in 1993, making it the first in the nation.

Recent Events

Behind the Scenes Tour of the Carnegie Natural History Museum
On Friday, November 8, SAA@Pitt took a behind-the-scenes tour of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History with Dr. Bernadette Callery, Museum Librarian and an alumna of the program here at Pitt.  Dr. Callery's presentation focused on records and knowledge management issues at the Carnegie in addition to taking a closer look at the museum's collection management system.  The group was also given the chance to view records management techniques employed in the mollusk and bird specimen departments of the museum.

SAA@Pitt Panel Session on "Archives and Terrorism"
On Friday, September 20th, the SAA@Pitt hosted a panel session entitled "Archives and Terrorism," which addressed the impact of the 9/11 attacks on the archives field. The panel of four was comprised of Barbara Black of the Somerset Historical Society, Dr. A. J. Plotke of ATT/American Express, Tom Schienfeldt of the 9/11 Digital Archive, and SIS's own Dr. Richard Cox.

SAA@Pitt Business Meeting
On Wednesday, November 13, the SAA@Pitt will hold a full business meeting at 5:30 pm in the new Student Commons on the first floor.  Business to be discussed will include, but not be exclusive to, the revised website and upcoming events.  Any member wishing to discuss a particular topic may email the officers, or simply bring the point up at the meeting (although we encourage you to email us, as we'll have a better chance of working it into the agenda). Also, any questions can be directed to the officers prior to the meeting.

Dr. Cox to speak on Archives and Terrorism
Dr. Richard Cox will be giving a talk at the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland on November 14, 2002.  Entitled "Flowers After the Funeral, The Meaning of Libraries, Archives and Museums in the Post 9/11 World," the lecture will be held at 4:30 pm in the Special Events Room of the University's
McKeldin Library.

Registration for the Spring 2003 semester will begin on Monday, October 29.  Registration forms are available outside of SIS 633 and from the Registrar on the 5th floor.  Archives students are reminded that the four courses required for the Archives track are:

LIS 2224 Archival Appraisal
LIS 2674 Digital Preservation
