My career as an archivist started in my native state, Maryland, and my earliest writings about archives, historical manuscripts, and records management concerned the evolution of archives in that state. It was always my intention to attempt to write a fuller study about the history of archives in Maryland, but other commitments prevented me from accomplishing this. This online version of a work in progress, one that will never be completed, is the culmination of those early writings. My first professional essay -- "A History of the Calvert Papers, MS. 174," Maryland Historical Magazine 68 (Fall 1973): 309-22 started me on the path of what became a masters thesis in history at the University of Maryland, under the able direction of the late Walter Rundell, and what propelled me to write a number of other essays on Maryland archives.
