FastTrack MLIS School of Information Sciences

General DL/Online Education@SIS

The University of Pittsburgh ensures that online courses are of the same quality as courses taught on-campus by holding online courses up to the same evaluation standards.  All online courses are developed and taught by University faculty, and many distance learning students are offered opportunities to meet their instructors through residency programs. In order to provide students with a quality online learning, online educators use various resources including print materials, web-based materials, and video materials.  For more information about distance education at the University of Pittsburgh, visit http://www.pitt.edu/~ciddeweb/de/.

Guidelines

To ensure that the online educative setting is equivalent to the learning environment on-campus, the University follows guidelines created by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  For more information about these guidelines, visit http://www.pitt.edu/~ciddeweb/de/guidelines.htm.

FastTrack MLIS

The FastTrack MLIS program is a part-time, ALA-accredited degree program offered by SIS. Students can earn their MLIS degrees in two years by taking two courses a term for six consecutive terms. Courses are delivered to students using various methods of instruction, including Web-based asynchronous course delivery, CD-ROM delivery of course and program related materials, real-time conferencing, and on-campus learning.

Courses are offered to students through online only formats as well as blended courses in which online students participate and learn with on-campus students.  On-campus students not enrolled in the FastTrack MLIS program may also take up to two (2) FastTrack MLIS courses, given permission from their advisor and the director of Distance Education and Outreach, Dr. Sue Alman.  For more information about FastTrack MLIS, visit http://fasttrack.sis.pitt.edu/.

WISE

Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) is a program in which students may take online courses from other ALA-accredited universities. This option is open to both on-campus and FastTrack MLIS students, and it promotes communication and collaboration among students, faculty, and universities worldwide.
