After that, I joined China Education Electronic Corp. (CEEC), one of the top-10 educational software providers in China. In the following year, I participated in many software programs ' development; most of these software packages are still widely used in Chinese schools today. This hands-on experience not only helped me develop many practical programming skills but also made me comprehend the guideline of system design. Shortly after I joined CEEC, I was appointed to lead a group developing distance learning system (CEEC DLS 1.0), one of the first distance learning software in China. The experience on DLS enabled me to watch the process of software development from a comprehensive view. I came to understand the importance of teamwork: It is not a computer expert but a network of different computer professionals play the leader role. |

Realizing the importance of information management approach in an organization, I began to consciously shift my attention from technical details to the integration of techniques and management issues. Then, I read plenty of relevant books, such as those on data mining for managers, knowledge management in an organization, and electronic commerce etc. One year later, I was promoted to be the vice director of the research & development department. Being a leader is much different from being a programmer, I further studied lots about management arts and communication skills, which, although seemingly irrelevant, proved beneficial. |

After I had worked at CEEC for about 3 years and before I accompanied my husband and one of my best friends -- Yefei Peng, to Purdue University in the summer of 2002, in order to better understand the workflow and the culture of American enterprise, I entered OpenTV Inc., which is one of the most deployed interactive TV solution provider in the world with more than 50 million viewers in over 50 countries today. As a senior quality assurance engineer, I was in charge of the quality of OpenTV's management application software. Although stay at OpenTV Inc. is a bit short, working and collaborating with engineers at different branches around the world is an forgetable experience. |

Now I am a PhD student of School of Information Science, UPitt. The reason why I chose SIS@Pitt to seek my doctoral degree is: 1) SIS emphasizes both serious study and cooperative atmosphere, which I believe will be beneficial to my future research, 2) Dr. Michael Spring, my advisor, is a lovely professor, and our research group, Augmentation Research Center, is a nice place to study and work. Though he is strict to me and my colleague, he always inspires us. Sometimes when he yells (not really angry), it makes me think of my father. :) |
