Leanne Bowler, PhD, is an assistant professor at the School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, where she is responsible for the specialization in children and youth. She teaches courses about new media literacy, technology for young people, children's literature and media, and early literacy and language development.
Dr. Bowler received her PhD from McGill University, Montréal, Canada. Her dissertation explored the landscape of adolescent metacognitive knowledge during the information search process. She has a Master of Library Science and a Master of Education (Educational Psychology) and has worked as an information professional in a variety of settings, including public libraries and hospitals.
Her research interests are in the area of children’s and youth information behaviour, with a focus on new media literacies. Topics that Dr. Bowler is currently exploring are: the metacognitive knowledge needed to navigate new media, health information on the Web for teens, design-based research with young people, and transmedia navigation of multi-modal stories for children and young adults.
