The National Science Foundation has fostered much of the development of digital library technologies, services, and collections, both in the US and in collaboration with international partners. The Digital Library Initiative (DLI), followed by DLI-2 paved the way for the remarkable progress made over the past decade. Each of these initiatives developed and evolved through the collective wisdom and insight of the research community in open discussion. As DLI-2 approaches its conclusion, NSF is, once again, engaging the international community of scholars, practitioners, and users to advise it on future research needs and opportunities.

This invitational workshop on “post digital library futures,” or “ubiquitous knowledge environments,” as some of us are beginning to think of them, is the beginning of the dialogue. The proceedings will be available on this web site later this summer, documenting the findings and recommendations of the workshop participants.

We anticipate that the workshop and its proceedings will spawn a broader discussion throughout the research community that will converge in substantial concurrence around a final set of recommendations to help shape the future of federally-sponsored research in this critical area.
