Academics / Specializations / Preservation Management Studies

May enter this specialization in the Fall Semester.

The Department of Library and Information Science has a long standing interest in preservation and its management, and provides MLIS students with the opportunity to focus their studies in this important area. We offer a wide range of coursework, taught by both full-time and adjunct faculty members. The primary faculty advisor for the Preservation Management Studies specialization is Richard Cox.

The Preservation Management specialization requires students to take 36 units of coursework. All students, whether full- or part-time, should plan on starting their studies in the Fall term.

Core Requirements

Preservation Management students must take the following five MLIS core requirements:

Preservation students are also required to take:

  • INFSCI 2510 - Information Systems
  • INFSCI 2610 - Data Structures
  • INFSCI 2710 - Database Management

Designing Your Program in Preservation Management

The field of preservation is interdisciplinary, thus the Preservation Management specialization has been designed with some flexibility so that students may focus in particular areas, such as: preservation of
paper-based media, preservation of electronic media, archival preservation, or preservation of moving images. The following charts offer suggestions for sequencing coursework over three terms for those four areas. (We suggest that students begin in the Fall term since many courses which are prerequisites to more advanced courses tend to be offered only in the Fall). Students may also design their program to focus on other
areas in consultation with their advisor.
