Digital Resource Profiling for Wide Area Applications (Nebula project)

Source: National Science Foundation ($450, 000)
PI: Vladimir Zadorozhny
Duration: 08/2002-09/2005

Abstract: The Nebula project on digital resource profiling for Wide Area Application (IIS/ITR) is a collaborative research with University of Maryland at College Park and Technion, Haifa. This project aims at constructing profiles, information regarding servers, network, and client performance. With such profiles at hand, mediators can optimize query performance. Also, such information improves Web caching utilization, thus reducing retrieval latency, a common deficiency in contemporary wide area applications. This research is motivated, in part, by the evolution of name resolution services, e.g., the Handle system, an emerging IETF/IRTF standard, and the challenges faced in supporting an information-centric infrastructure. Formal results developed in the theoretical study are evaluated on large-scale applications. Collaboration with Corporation for National Research Initiative (CNRI) Handle protocol developers provides a test-bed for large-scale evaluation.
