The era of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) has come! CPS entail tight integration and coordination of cyber and physical resources. CPS are becoming the nervous system of our modern society as they are increasingly being incorporated in virtually all aspects of control and communications. From worldwide human-machine interactions and gaming to smart infrastructure systems in healthcare, energy, transportation, and emergency response, all are enabled and advanced by operations within CPS. Today's CPS comprise highly dynamic, interdependent global networks of cyber and cyber-enabled infrastructures, telecommunications networks, computing systems, integrated sensors, control systems, and embedded processors and physical controllers impacting all aspects of our lives.
The CyPhyCARD' 2011 workshop aims at exploring basic and applied research in security, trust and resilience of CPS. We primarily focus on systems that are highly complex and typically identified by uncertainty and emergent structures and behaviors. These complex CPS are characterized by many factors including their extreme scales and data rates, their highly dynamic environmental and system contexts, and their complex integrations of cyber and physical controls and resources. Consequently, CPS defenses are of paramount importance as events in cyber and physical spaces may have extremely significant impacts on system operations. Given the scale, complexity, and sensitivity of the targeted systems and their historical reliance on untrustworthy components, CPS defense becomes an extremely difficult endeavor requiring a multi-disciplinary research agenda.
The workshop aims to bring together researchers in various disciplines to explore CyPhyCARD issues. The technical objectives of the workshop are to explore the fundamental science and technology to create CPS defenses that would enable large-scale systems and infrastructures to:
1) Provide robust control and communications
2) Be self-aware and situational-aware in real time
3) Provide continuous services even under persistent attacks and failures
4) Work together cooperatively with shared defenses and understanding
CyPhyCARD'2011 will be held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Work-sharing, (CollaborateCom-2011), which is jointly sponsored by Create-Net, the Institute for Computer Sciences, and Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (ICST), and IEEE Computer Society (pending).
