Welcome to the SIS CourseAgent: Adaptive Online Course Recommendation System.
SIS CourseAgent is specially designed for students and faculties in the School of Information Sciences and is also available to the public who has interests in the courses offered at the School of Information Sciences.
The SIS CourseAgent is a good tool to give you recommendation on courses that might interest you or has the most benefit to you. Based on advisor's recommendation and students' evaluations about each course, you could have a snapshot about what courses are useful for you according to your personal career goals and your progress of taking courses relevant to your personal career goals.
The profile section presents general information about you and you can edit some of the information such as password, your first and last name, and your email address. You need to click on "Update” button to make the changes happen.
In this section you can specify the list of the courses you have taken and also you can evaluate the difficulty level and the relevance of the course to each of your career goals (You have to specify your career interests before evaluating your taken courses.)
To fill the list of your taken courses, you can view the schedule of each semester and simply add your taken courses from each semester to the list. To see the schedule, you need to choose the semester and year and click on “List” button. The schedule table shows the general information about the course (Course Number, Course Title, and Instructor). To view more details about each course, you can select the course from the schedule and click on “Show Info”.
To evaluate the course, you select a course from taken courses list and click on “Evaluate” button. In the evaluation page, you can evaluate the difficulty level of the course on a scale from 1 to 5 which 1 means very easy course, and 5 means very hard course. Similarly, you can evaluate the relevance of each course to your career goal on a scale from 1 to 5 which 1 means not relevant at all and 5 means very much relevant. You can also leave comments about the course which will be available to other students as well. You need to click on “Save” to save your evaluations.
If you have already evaluated the course, your previous evaluation will be available here and you can modify and save your changes.
It is important for you to evaluate as many courses as possible. This way, the system will be able to help you more by showing how much progress you have made towards your career goals (More information on this is available in “Career Scope” section). Moreover, the higher the number of evaluation in the system, the higher will be the confidence of recommendation of the course to each student.
NOTE: After you evaluate a course you can not delete that course from your taken courses.
Here you can see the list of the available career goals, and you can modify the list of your career goals by adding or deleting career goals. The right hand side list shows your selected career goals.
In addition to specifying your taken courses, you can also specify courses you plan to take later. On the left side, you can see the list of courses you can plan and you can easily add any course to your study plan which is shown on the right. You can also delete any course from your study plan.
You can see the detailed information for each course, by selecting the course and clicking on “View Course Information” button.

You can select the semester and year and view the list of the courses offered in that semester.
CourseAgent provides a personalized schedule for you. First, it highlights your taken courses, your planned courses, and your registered courses (Taken at the current semester) with different background color. In addition to the academic information about the offering of the course, here you can also view information about the average workload of the course and the relevance of the course to you. The shovel icon (
) represents the difficulty level of the course. The higher number of shovels represents higher difficulty level. The thumbs-up icon (
) represents the degree of relevance. The higher number of thumbs-up represents the higher degree of relevance. Note that the evaluation of the course is for the specific offering of the course in your viewed schedule which means the course plus the instructor who is teaching the course.
If you have forgotten to evaluate a taken course here you have the option to do so. You can just click on “Evaluate it” which is a link to evaluation page provided for all your taken courses. Also if you want to add one of the courses to your study plan, you can do it easily by click on “Plan It” and it will be added to your study plan.
For the schedule of current semester, you can also register your already planned courses but simply clicking on “Register It” .
Your advisor can also recommend important courses to you to take and the recommendation will appear in the schedule with this icon
.
If you need more information about any of the courses, you can click on the course number and detailed information about the course will be available. Also you can see the details of the evaluation of the course by you and other students by clicking on the course number or evaluation icons (
or
). You can also view detailed information about the instructor of the course by clicking on their name.
In career scope, you can view the progress you have made towards each career goal. Your taken courses that are evaluated by you will be counted towards your progress. The more relevant the course to your career goal, the more progress you will make towards the goal. Also the difficulty level of the course would affect your progress. A very simple course would not necessarily have the same effect as a very difficult course.
To have the real picture of your progress it is really important for you to evaluate your taken courses; otherwise the contribution of the course towards your career goal is not clear. And if you have forgotten to evaluate your taken courses by now, the link to evaluation page is available here as well. Just click on “Evaluate It” .
Also if you have planned to take courses that are considered relevant by other students to your career goal, the contribution of these courses will be shown in the progress bar with different color which means how much you will progress if you take these planned courses.
For each of your career goal, a list of recommended courses is provided as well. The recommendation is based on the average evaluation of the relevance of the course to the career goal from the community of students. If you decide to add any of the recommended courses to your study plan, you can do it at the same place by just clicking on “Plan It” .
If you need more information about any of the courses, you can click on the course number and detailed information about the course will be available. Also you can see the details of the evaluation of the course by you and other students by clicking on the course number or evaluation icons (
or
).
In course catalog you can view the list of courses for each area of your study program. In addition to general course information, the average relevance and difficulty level of each course is shown as well. Note, that since the specific offering of the course is not clear in this view, the evaluation information is average over all offerings. For example, the difficulty level represent the average difficulty of the course over all instructors who have taught the course.
You can click on Course Number or Evaluation Icons to view detailed information about the course and evaluations.
The faculties view, provides information for a selected faculty. In addition to general information about the selected faculty, the teaching history is also shown.

When you are done with registration, you can click on View My Registration Form to view your registration form. The form is exactly the same as the official registration form and you just need to fill some personal information such as social security number.
