Bellies, Buns, & Books:
Contributed by Sarah Becking
Looking around the SIS Building, I wonder how the stereotype of the mean old female librarian with requisite bun in her hair persists. How many of our friends and family responded to the news of our library and information science plans with "but you're not the type of person who works in a library?" Several possible responses occur to me, some designed to take advantage of a teaching moment, some obnoxious. But for the amusement of library students, there are some interesting and entertaining ideas about the lives of librarians in various media and in real life. Some particularly relevant films are highlighted at:
An extensive, annotated list of movies (350+), with
simple categories and a sense of humor:
A list of various resources -- print and electronic
-- concerning the roles and images of librarians. Includes funny pop culture
stuff, too:
For an opinion on whether we should enjoy, ignore,
or worry about librarians' images, see
A thoughtful exploration of the causes and development
of the sterotypes:
"The Role of Archetypal Images in the Humanization
of Librarianship:" literary, psychological, and fascinating:
The bellydancing librarian and more:

Librarians in Comics:
Enjoy these websites! At the risk of sounding naively optimistic, I must say that I expect our generation of librarians to shake things up a bit.
