Article I. Name
The name of this organization shall be the School
of Information Sciences Alumni Society of the University
of Pittsburgh (to be abbreviated as the SIS Alumni
Society or SAS).
Article II. Purpose
The purpose of this Society shall be to promote the
welfare, interests, and mission of the University of
Pittsburgh, the School of Information Sciences, and
its alumni.
Article III. Membership
Section 3.01 There shall be three classes of membership
(a) Active members may be those who hold a degree
or certificate from the University of Pittsburgh
School of Information Sciences (SIS), also known
by historical names: 1) School of Library and Information
Science, 2) Graduate School of Library and Information
Sciences, 3) Graduate Library School, 4) Carnegie
Library School, and 5) Training School for Children’s
Librarians.
(b) Associate members may be current SIS students.
(c) Honorary members may be current or past faculty
and other persons who have made meritorious contributions
to the fields of Library and Information Science,
Telecommunications, or Information Science.
Section 3.02 All classes of membership shall be entitled
to rights and privileges of membership, although only
active members can hold office and vote in officer
elections.
Article IV. Officers and Their Duties
Section 4.01 All officers of the Society must be dues
paying members of the University of Pittsburgh Alumni
Association.
Section 4.02 The officers of the Society shall be
the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer,
and the Immediate Past President and shall comprise
the Executive Board. The Executive Board, with a minimum
of three affirmative votes, may fill a vacant office,
either at a meeting or by electronic proxy.
Section 4.03 The Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer
are elected offices. The President and Immediate Past
President offices are filled through succession.
Section 4.04 Terms of office are two years. The Treasurer
will be elected in the odd years, and the Vice President
and Secretary will be elected in the even years.
Section 4.05 The duties of the officers shall be as
follows:
(a) The President, subject to the Executive Board,
shall have general supervision and control over
the affairs of the SAS. The President will represent
the SAS at meetings of the Pitt Alumni Association.
(b) The Vice President shall 1) perform duties
of the President in the absence of the President,
2) perform duties as assigned by the President, and
3) function in the role of President-Elect. The Vice
President shall have duties arising from the needs
of the SAS.
(c) The Secretary shall maintain, preserve, and
archive the records of the meetings of the SAS.
(d) The Treasurer shall have custody of the funds
of the SAS and maintain appropriate financial records.
Should funds of the SAS be administered by the University
of Pittsburgh, the Treasurer will be the authorized
liaison to the appropriate Pitt financial department.
(e) The Immediate Past President oversees and advises
the process of nominating officers for the SAS.
Article V. Meetings
Section 5.01 There will be an Annual Meeting of the
members of the SAS in the spring of each year.
Section 5.02 A majority of Executive Board members
in office shall constitute a quorum for the transaction
of business at any meeting of the Executive Board.
Section 5.03 Officers will be elected at the Annual
Meeting the date of which shall be set by the Executive
Board. The election will be by simple majority of the
voting members present at the Annual Meeting.
Section 5.04 Under the general supervision of the
President, the Executive Board may conduct proxy meetings
and votes by electronic means such as email in pursuit
of the goals and purpose of the SAS.
Section 5.05 The rules of procedure at meetings of
the SAS shall be those set forth in the latest edition
Roberts Rules of Order Revised unless otherwise provided
in these by-laws.
Article VI. Committees
Section 6.01 The Executive Board may establish committees,
which shall be responsible to the Executive Board.
Section 6.02 The Executive Board may authorize funds
for committee expenses.
Article VII. Amendments
Section 7.01 The by-laws may be amended by a two-thirds
vote of the members present at an Annual Meeting upon
recommendation of the Executive Board.
Section 7.02 The by-laws and their amendments are
subject to the provisions of the by-laws of the University
of Pittsburgh Alumni Association.
Section 7.03 Any member of the SAS may submit in writing
a proposed amendment to the Executive Board for consideration. |
