    Math And Html

    By Rakesh N. Mehta

    Introduction

The hypertext of HTML (Hyper Text Machine Language) has the power to display, symbolically and naturally, the characteristics of documents containing technical knowledge in a browser-independent manner. This power has been efficiently utilized for graphics, fonts, color, audio, and many other areas. This paper summarizes the status of math representation on the Web, an unresolved and controversial issue.

HTML is becoming a terrific means of communication information. It is encoding many different types of documents. But to this day, there has been no easy way of writing mathematical equations on the Web. Without this ability to put complex equations on the Web, mathematicians, physicians, and other math-oriented professionals cannot efficiently communicate on this medium. As a result, the race to put a good standard for representing math on the Web has begun.
