    Electronic Data Interchange

    By Joan O. Pupik

    Introduction

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a way of conducting business by the electronic exchange of business transactions. Business transactions are coded in a defined format and transmitted directly by electronic media between computer systems.

Individual industry have used EDI for years using industry-specific procedures. Standardization of EDI in the United States has incorporated these industry-specific standards to produce a set of cross-industry standards defined by ANSI ASC X12.

On the international level, the United Nations has promoted the United Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (EDIFACT). ASC X12 and EDIFACT have agreed to merge their efforts, with X12 gradually moving toward EDIFACT.

This paper will define the basics of the ASC X12 EDI and the EDIFACT standards, the history, some current issues and the factors that may influence it in the future.
