WebEx Conferencing System

September 09, 2009

Several faculty members in the LIS program have experimented with the use of Pitt’s new web conferencing system. Initial reports indicate it is a useful facility with applicability to online meetings and to online teaching. Those who are interested may learn about our experience to date with it from Sue Alman and Chris Tomer. Users need to have an individual account ($30/month + $55 setup fee) and there are time charges for the conference calls. The following is the University announcement about the service:

The University Web Conferencing Service, powered by WebEx, is a secure and convenient online solution for faculty and staff to host virtual meetings and collaborate with colleagues across campus or around the globe. The service supports Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. Integrated voice conferencing services are also available. You must subscribe to WebEx and obtain host access to hold meetings and invite participants. You can invite anyone to participate in a meeting; a subscription is not required for participants.

Host access (for one individual) includes use of any of the following WebEx product(s) that meet your specific needs:

  • Meeting Center supports meetings, presentations, and real-time collaboration.
  • Training Center enables virtual training and distance learning.
  • Support Center can be used by IT specialists for remote support.
  • Event Center is available to host major event Web casts and Webinars.
