Budget update

As you know, the Commonwealth appropriation has been reduced to the point that it is now below 8% of the Pitt operating budget. The Provost has sought a balanced response in her development of each School’s operating budget. The components have included a larger-than-desired but less-than-sufficient tuition increase, modest across the board reductions, and a few targeted reductions. Among the latter is an elimination of the Deans’ component of RDF funds. Unfortunately the RDF funds are where I find most of my ability to respond favorably to needs and opportunities that arise in the course of the year. I anticipate that, as a result, we will all need to be very cautious regarding unanticipated expenses.
