| On
behalf of the students, faculty, and staff at SIS, I
am pleased to welcome you to our School’s web site.
I invite you to learn more about us… our programs,
degrees, people, and research.
SIS is one of the nation’s pioneering schools
in the education of information professionals, with a
history that reaches back more than a hundred years to
the days of Andrew Carnegie. Throughout that history,
we have built and sustained a tradition of innovation
and excellence. Today, our programs in Information Science,
Telecommunications, and Library and Information Science
are among the very best in the country and attract students
and visiting scholars from around the world.
At SIS, you will find the opportunity to expand your
knowledge and skills in a wide-ranging array of information
specialties. The School offers an undergraduate program
in Information Science, and graduate study leading to
the Masters and PhD degrees in both Information Science
and in Telecommunications. Library
and Information Science Graduate Program offers courses
of study leading to a Masters degree, a PhD degree, and
Certificates of Advanced Study. For students who are
better served by a distance education program, we offer
our FastTrack program for earning a Masters degree in
Library and Information Science.
SIS positions itself at the nexus of technology, information,
and society. The challenges and opportunities confronting
society in the 21st century require professionals who
are not only technologically capable, but also are skilled
in the management of information and understand how technology
and information converge to serve the interests of the
individual and society.
More than 700 students from over 25 countries are currently
learning these skills at SIS. We offer students excellent
computing facilities and library resources, and an opportunity
to live and learn in one of the best urban environments
available anywhere. At Pitt, it is truly the case that
the city is our campus.
Enjoy your visit here, and please come back often. I
hope I have the opportunity to personally welcome you
into our community.
