Steve
Scherer, a Principal Staff Software Engineer at Motorola
Inc, will discuss “Mobile Device Embedded Security – History
and Current Challenges” as part of the LERSAIS
Seminar Series. This lecture will take place on
Friday, November 16, at 2:30 pm in Room 404. A
meet-the-speaker coffee will take place at 2:00 pm.
Mr. Scherer will discuss how
security should not be viewed as a liability or just
a cost of doing business, but rather as an opportunity.
He asserts that good security can be a distinguishing
asset and competitive advantage. This discussion will
focus on the history of security on mobile devices, security
policies, and how they are relevant to the financial
success to companies like Motorola. Mr. Scherer will
specifically focus on lessons Motorola has learned over
the years and where the embedded industry is headed.
Steven Scherer is a Principal
Staff Software Engineer within the Mobile Device Business
of Motorola. He is Co-Chair of the Security Governance
Body of Mobile Devices, which has responsibility for
security roadmap creation, security incident handling,
as well as product compliance to security roadmap. Steve
led the effort to put a process in place within that
group to help teams institutionalize security concepts
into their day-to-day jobs, and into each phase of the
product development lifecycle. He has a Masters in Telecommunications
from DePaul University and a BS in Electrical Engineering
from the University of Wisconsin -- Madison. He has
been with Motorola for 10 years.
