The
School of Information Sciences and the American Library
Association (ALA) are pleased to announce the first six
recipients of the Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship, a program
funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS) through a grant of nearly $1 million to ALA and
SIS. Of the inaugural six recipients,
two are enrolled here at SIS: Janet Ceja Alcalá and
Elisabeth Rodriguez. Ms. Rodriguez, who was a 2005
recipient of the Spectrum Scholarship for MLIS Studies,
has been named the Elizabeth Martinez Spectrum Doctoral
Fellow in honor of the Spectrum founder and ALA executive
director from 1994-97. Fellows will begin their doctoral
studies in the Fall of 2007.
The purpose of the Fellowship Program is to recruit
and provide full tuition support and stipends to 10 full-time
library and information science (LIS) doctoral students
for all four years of study at any of the participating
institutions. In addition to SIS, nine other library
and information science programs are participating in
the effort: University of Arizona, University of California
at Los Angeles, University of Michigan, Rutgers University,
Simmons College, Syracuse University, University of Tennessee
at Knoxville, University of Texas at Austin, and University
of Wisconsin at Madison. SIS Faculty member Toni
Carbo, who also holds a joint appointment in the Graduate
School of Public and International Affairs, will serve
as Director of the Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship Program.
The fellowship builds on the success of the ALA Spectrum
scholarship program, which began in 1997 and has since
provided financial support to more than 415 individuals
pursuing LIS master’s degrees or school media certification. Now
approaching its 10-year anniversary, the program has
become one of the library profession’s most significant
diversity and recruitment driving forces. SIS has
been very successful in attracting the Spectrum students
for the MLIS program – the School has enrolled
13 Spectrum Scholars since the inception of the program.
