The FastTrack MLIS Program is designed for students
who want to earn their degree from an ALA-accredited
program, but cannot attend the on-campus program in Pittsburgh.
The two-year degree program is Web-based, and the courses
are taught by the same faculty as the on-campus program. The
application deadline for the FastTrack MLIS program is
July 1, 2007 for a Fall 2007 admission.
This online program offers three tracks, allowing students
to specialize in school librarianship; medical librarianship/medical
informatics; or the more general library and information
science degree program, designed primarily for individuals
who want to pursue careers in public, academic or special
libraries.
FastTrack MLIS also offers a unique component -- students
are admitted as part of a cohort of their peers that
will move through the program together. The cohort system
allows students to draw upon their peers as well as their
instructors for support throughout the program. Peer
interactions play an important part of the learning experience,
and FastTrack MLIS incorporates this crucial association
into the program.
Students complete two courses each term for six consecutive
terms, completing their degree in two years. Students
complete their assignments when it fits their schedule
as the program is asynchronous. Early in their studies,
FastTrack students come to the University of Pittsburgh
for five days to complete course requirements, receive
hands-on computer training and to meet the School's faculty
and staff and other FastTrack students. In each of the
subsequent terms, FastTrack students are required to
come to campus for a weekend, conveniently scheduled
so as to impact work schedules as little as possible.
Students will find the technology behind the FastTrack
MLIS Program easy to use and manage. FastTrack
utilizes four methods of instruction: Web-based asynchronous
course delivery; CD-ROM delivery of course-and program-related
materials; synchronized, real-time conferencing for interactive
sessions between instructor and students and among students;
and the on-campus learning experience.

start building your career by working with a dedicated

MLIS program.
