Christinger Tomer, Associate Professor
at SIS, and Kelly Otter, Associate Dean of the College
of General Studies, were awarded funding as part of
the Provost’s Advisory Council on Instructional
Excellence’s Eighth Annual Innovation in Education
Awards Program. Tomer and Otter were recognized for
their proposal on “The Planning, Development,
and Implementation of an Online Information Literacy
Curriculum.”
The project will be funded from May 2007 through April
2008. The goal of the project is to create an information
literacy curriculum which will teach students how to
skillfully manage a key resource – information.
The curriculum will focus on information literacy skills
that will not only enhance the remainder of the educational
experience at Pitt, but create a foundation for lifelong
learning.
Tomer, who teaches in the Library & Information
Science Program at SIS, has research interests that
span digital libraries, the economics of information
transfer, and the open source and open access movements.
In addition to his research, Tomer teaches courses
in Technology for Information Management and Introduction
to Information Technologies. Otter, Associate Dean
of the College of General Studies (CGS), is responsible
for CGS programs, curriculum, enrollment, advising
and retention of adult and nontraditional students.
She will also supervise the Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute and the McCarl Center for Nontraditional
Students.
