SIS welcomes five Spectrum Scholars
to the Master of Library and Information Science program! These
students will begin their studies in September of 2006
with the assistance of the Spectrum Scholarship Program
administered by the American Library Association (ALA). The
intent of this national scholarship program is to recruit
applicants and award scholarships to American Indian/Alaska
Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino,
and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students
for graduate programs in library and information studies. ALA
awarded 69 scholarships as part of the 2006-2007 Spectrum
program; five of those scholarships were given to students
who have enrolled in Pitt’s MLIS program. Since
the program’s inception in 1997, SIS has enrolled
19 Spectrum Scholars, ranking second (tied with UCLA)
in total enrollment of Spectrum Scholars.
Beginning
in the Fall of 2006, the following students will be
the SIS Spectrum Scholars:
- Sarah Eng
- Lareese Hall
- Rachel Masilamani
- Christina Patton
- Brenda Salem.
SIS is proud of its tradition of increasing diversity
in the School. Welcome to these Spectrum Scholars!
