PITTSBURGH - Ronald
Larsen, dean of the School of Information Sciences (SIS)
at the University of Pittsburgh , has announced three
new faculty appointments.
Daqing He joins SIS' Department of Library
and Information Science as an assistant professor. His
research interests include information retrieval, Web user
context learning and user modeling, interactive retrieval
interface design, computational linguistics, and World
Wide Web log mining and analysis. After earning the B.S.
and M.S. degrees at the University of Aeronautics and Astronautics
in Beijing , China , He earned the Ph.D. degree from the
Division of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh
in the United Kingdom . Since then, He has worked as a
research fellow at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen
, U.K. , and, most recently, as a research scientist at
the University of Maryland at College Park .
Glenn L. Ray is a new assistant professor
in SIS's Department of Information Science and Telecommunications.
His professional and research interests include software
engineering, object- and aspect-oriented analysis and design,
rule-based systems, Web services, formal methods, geographic
information systems, and distance education. Immediately
before coming to Pitt, Ray was an assistant professor in
the IT department at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro
, Ga. He also has held adjunct faculty appointments at
Florida A&M and Florida State universities. In addition,
Ray has served as an analyst/architect for digital ESP
, Inc., of Raleigh , N.C. ; as president and owner of Capital
Communications of America, a telecom and Internet services
marketing firm in Tallahassee , Fla. ; as legislative coordinator
for the Florida Association of Counties; and as a petroleum
geologist/geophysicist for Amoco Corp. in New Orleans .
He earned the Ph.D. degree in earth science from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, the Master of Software Engineering
Science degree from Florida A&M University , and the
B.S. degree in geology Florida State University .
A new assistant professor in Pitt's University Center
for Social and Urban Research, Stuart William
Shulman also will have a secondary appointment
in SIS' Department of Library and Information Science.
Shulman's research centers on emerging issues in digital
government. Most recently, Shulman examined the impact
of new communications technologies, such as the Internet,
on public involvement in the regulatory rule-making process,
leading to more sophisticated and manageable information
systems for citizen/government interaction. Most recently,
Shulman was an assistant professor in Drake University
's Environmental Science and Policy Program. He also has
been an adjunct assistant professor in Providence College
's political science department and a visiting assistant
professor in the University of Puget Sound 's politics
and government department. Shulman earned the Ph.D. degree
in political science at the University of Oregon and the
B.A. degree in political science and English from Boston
University .
"These three new faculty members continue the school's
tradition and reputation of excellence in expanding society's
understanding of the multidisciplinary dimensions of an
information-driven society," Larsen noted.
SIS educates information professionals for a wide range
of specializations in the information field. The school
emphasizes the integration of people, knowledge, and technology
for decision-making, problem-solving, and learning. SIS
offers six degrees and three certificate programs in telecommunications,
information sciences, and library and information science.
Its internationally renowned faculty is dedicated to excellence
