Annual History and Awards Dinner
Mabel to Ma Bell to Babel – The History of Telephony
in the US
Dr. Richard A. Thompson, University of Pittsburgh
This discussion of telephony will cover many aspects
of the telephony industry. In addition to the technical
history, the legendary people, regulatory events and
social impact of the telephony industry will be explored.
The different aspects, and how they interact will also
be discussed. We will see that telephony is has been
a reflection of its times for more that 125 years.
Dr. Thompson has been with Pitt's Department of Information
Science and Telecommunications since 1989, and has been
Director of the Telecommunications Graduate Program in
since 1991. Before that, he worked for a total of 20
years at Bell Laboratories.
