BSIS student Jesse Hicks
received a $250.00 grant toward book purchases for his
successful participation in the Jennifer and Eric Spiegel
Book Fund Award student project competition. Jesse’s
essay “Questioning the Effect of Instant Messaging
on Adolescent Verbal and Social Development,” is
both very interesting and well written says Bob Perkoski,
Director of the Undergraduate Program. “Jesse stepped
forward and fulfilled the central idea of the competition
with a really solid and deserving effort,” says
Perkoski.
The Spiegel Book Fund was established by Pitt alumni
couple, Jennifer (1988 CAS, Communications) and Eric
Spiegel (1988 SLIS, BSIS) with the goal of giving back
to their respective programs and helping students afford
education, specifically books. The Spiegels conceived
of the award competition as a way to stretch students
to express themselves through writing. Presentations,
web design or other communications methods may also be
considered. Blending the Spiegels interests in communication
and IT, the annual topics focus on the interplay between
technology and society.
The Spiegel Book Fund Award hosts two annual award competitions.
The Communications department in Arts and Sciences administers
a $250.00 contest in the fall term each year for bachelors’ students.
The SIS bachelors’ of information science (BSIS)
program administers a second $250.00 contest in the winter
term. Through the Spiegel’s remarkable generosity,
the Spiegel Book Fund Award is an endowed award which
will be offered every year in perpetuity. Look for it
next year!
