Abstract: We describe a memory-based
approach to robot learning, in which experiences, observed
behavior performed by others, and plans are stored in
long term memory. This approach has its roots in the
motor tape hypothesis in neuroscience and the memory
drum hypothesis in psychology. The modern version of
this theory is used to generate rich behavior for humanoid
robots and videogame characters. The talk will describe
several implementations of the memory-based approach.
Speaker's Bio:Chris Atkeson is a Professor
in the Robotics Institute and Human-Computer Interaction
Institute at CMU. He received the M.S. degree in Applied
Mathematics (Computer Science) from Harvard University
and the Ph.D. degree in Brain and Cognitive Science from
M.I.T. Chris joined the M.I.T. faculty in 1986, moved
to the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Computing
in 1994, and moved to CMU in 2000.
