Abstract:
The goal of this talk is to provide an overview of projects hosted by DIST Teaching
and Learning Research (TaLeR) lab. TaLeR lab was established in 2001 to
design, develop, and evaluate educational tools that can support students in
learning and professors in teaching Information Science courses. Over the last
years we developed a number of useful tools that are currently serving as a
basis for both - practical teaching and several research projects. Following
the nature of the lab, the talk will include a teaching-oriented component and
a research-oriented component. In the teaching-oriented component I will demonstrate
several tools that we use in the context of introductory programming, data structures,
and information retrieval courses. All tools are available through the Web and
are ready to be used by any interested instructor. In the research-oriented
component I will present some results of our recent projects investigating the
influence of individualized self-assessment quizzes in an introductory programming
course.
