Abstract: Information visualization
refers to the application of icons, symbols, and metaphors
to the depiction and retrieval of information items.
Leading edge visualization tools have been introduced
on the Web for information retrieval, however user interaction
with visualized Web searching tools is relatively unexplored.
To examine the potential of visualization systems for
enhancing Web retrieval effectiveness, this presentation
will include:
- A theoretical overview supporting information
visualization applications.
- The findings from a user
study conducted with TouchGraph, a Web-based visualization
tool (Koshman, 2004).
- A review of current operational
Web-based visualization systems.
- An agenda for future
research in this area.
The exploration of user interaction with information
visualization tools is timely and necessary to advance
the incorporation of this technology in Web environments.
This line of research has pragmatic implications for
interface design, Web information retrieval, and digital
libraries. |
