ABSTRACT: Mobile position location initially
developed as a response to the U.S. Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) E-911 requirement, has become an
increasingly important research topic in wireless communications. While
safety is the main motivation for wireless position location, other
promising commercial applications include mobile yellow pages, information
and navigational services, roadside assistance, fleet management and
accident reporting. With recent advances in wireless communications,
position location in wireless may now be accomplished by a number of
techniques. In this paper, we review the fundamental principles of
position location and discuss the location methods implemented in each of
the major wireless standards as solutions to comply with FCC ruling. We
also present challenging problems in wireless position location as well as
possibilities in location applications.
