to the Library and Information Science Program at the
University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information
Sciences. For more than 100 years, the School
of Information Sciences has been educating information
professionals. Our degree programs and specializations,
carefully crafted to meet the needs of both students
and the library profession, have received national
recognition. Our Master of Library and Information

Beginning in Fall 2008, students in the FastTrack
MLIS program will be able to join the Archives,
Preservation, and Records Management specialization.
This specialization, ranked 4th in US News and
World Report, will offer students the opportunity
to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills
in:
• Records and
recordkeeping systems
• Electronic records
management
• Archival appraisal and access
• The history and evolution
of recordkeeping systems
• Digital preservation
• Preservation management of library
and archives collections
Students will learn to identify
and analyze recordkeeping syustems from legal,
evidential, and cutural perspectives. Courses
offered as part of the specialization cover topics
such as advocacy and public programming, ethical
issues, appraisal and records scheduling, digitization
and digital preservation, and management of archives,

Web-based
Information Science Education (WISE) is a unique and
groundbreaking opportunity for Pitt students to take
elective online courses from other ALA-accredited programs.
Leading schools in the information field (see list
below) have gone outside the classroom to extend their
reach to broaden the online educational opportunities
for students. The WISE consortium uses advanced technology
as a means to enrich one’s education and foster

Bernadette Callery will join the Faculty of the iSchool as an Assistant Professor in September 2008. Dr. Callery has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor since 2007 and as an adjunct since 2000. She has been teaching courses in the Archives, Preservation and Records Management area. As of September, she will be the lead faculty member for this very popular specialization in the MLIS program. Prior to joining the faculty here at the iSchool, Dr. Callery was the Museum Librarian at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Library. More...
