Why should I join ALA and SCALA?
ALA and SCALA offer you opportunities to become
involved with the
leading professional organization for librarians. You will have
opportunities to develop your leadership skills, to learn more about
professional issues, and to network with other MLIS students.
How do I become a member of SCALA?
You are already a member of SCALA if you are enrolled
in the MLIS program at the University of
Pittsburgh! All enrolled students--including Fast Track
students--are considered SCALA members. We ask that you
become an active member by attending meetings and events; this allows
you to reap the full benefits of what SCALA has to offer by meeting
your
fellow classmates, learning more about contemporary trends and themes
in the field, meeting guest speakers, and getting to know your
instructors on a more personal level.
**FastTrack students:
Please contact us for more information on how to become actively
involved in SCALA. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Susan Alman, is also the
FastTrack advisor. We have a FastTrack student liaison to make
sure that all students who wish to become involved in SCALA have the
opportunity to do so.
How do I become a member of ALA?
ALA's student membership costs $30
(2007-08 rates) and includes a subscription to
American Libraries as well as AL Direct, a weekly email newsletter;
however, we also strongly recommend you join the New
Members Round Table (NMRT). It's an additional $10 but well
worth
the cost. On it, you'll meet new and emerging members of the library
community as well as discuss topics that all new librarians should know
including common "how to's" of the library field. It's a great way to
develop leadership skills and become involved!
