Welcome
to the Library and Information Science Program at the
University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information
Sciences. For more than 100 years, the School
of Information Sciences has been educating information
professionals. Our degree programs and specializations,
carefully crafted to meet the needs of both students
and the library profession, have received national
recognition. Our Master of Library and Information
Science degree program is accredited by the American
Library Association and has been ranked as one of the
top-ten programs by US News & World Report in the
magazine’s 2007 edition of “America’s

Web-based
Information Science Education (WISE) is a unique and
groundbreaking opportunity for Pitt students to take
elective online courses from other ALA-accredited programs.
Leading schools in the information field (see list
below) have gone outside the classroom to extend their
reach to broaden the online educational opportunities
for students. The WISE consortium uses advanced technology
as a means to enrich one’s education and foster

Anthony Debons Offers Course, Summer 2008 |

The
School of Information Sciences is proud to announce
that its ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information
Science degree program has been recognized as one of
the top-ten programs by US News & World
Report in the magazine’s 2007 edition
of “America’s
Best Graduate Schools.” The MLIS program
as a whole was ranked seventh in the
nation, based on a 2005 survey, and the MLIS Specializations

SIS is pleased to announce that Professor Anthony
Debons, one of the early founders of the Information
Science discipline, will teach a landmark course
in the Summer Term of 2008. This course, LIS
2970: Introduction to Information Science, will discuss
the key concepts about the human and technological
aspects of data, information and knowledge that are
the foundations of Information Science. The course
will be offered on-campus and via the FastTrack MLIS
Program, an online platform for Library and Information
