8. TEACHING REQUIREMENT

The teaching requirement is designed to (1) give the student experience in addressing an audience and responding to questions from that audience, and (2) give the student experience in organizing and teaching a course. Although not all Ph.D.s enter academic careers, the ability to organize and present technical material is an essential part of training for this degree, both because of the requirements of the degree and because of the expectation that such presentations will form a substantial portion of the student's future career.

The teaching requirement has three components. It is advisable that all three components be completed prior to the comprehensive examination in order that the student may subsequently concentrate more fully on his or her research program. The first requirement is that the student spend a term as a teaching assistant to a departmental faculty member. Duties during this term should include all phases of teaching, including assisting in the preparation and grading of examinations, and the presentation of one or two lectures. The second requirement is that the student must take a course in effective teaching. This course would include the following:

  1. attending FACDEV 2200, "Practicum on University Teaching," offered by the Office of Faculty Development,
  2. attending a series of lectures led by regular IS faculty members on such topics as curriculum design, scheduling, staffing, course and syllabus design, lecture design and preparation, use of teaching tools, presentation techniques, etc.,
  3. sitting through an entire course before teaching it,
  4. practice lectures.

This course must be taken prior to or concurrently with the third requirement, the teaching of an undergraduate course in information science. This teaching shall be supervised by a faculty member, who will direct the student in preparation of a course syllabus, monitor the student's teaching efforts, and help the student address any difficulties that arise. By University requirements, students who are not native speakers of English are required to take a test of spoken English before being approved for a teaching assignment (Regulations, p. 20. )

While teaching is a requirement for all Ph.D. students, the specific duties may be modified with the approval of the Ph.D. Committee should individual circumstances warrant it. Students who are or have been faculty members at another college or university are exempt from this requirement.
