Connecting people, information and technology is the mission of the School of Information Sciences. The Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) degree program builds on that mission by preparing students for careers as information professionals including systems analysts and designers, database developers and managers, information security experts and more. This 36-credit program can be completed in three semesters (depending upon course schedules) of full-time study or as many as four years of part-time study.
The curriculum has been designed to equip our graduates with a rigorous program that is also flexible, so that the specific needs of individual students can be met. We adhere to a philosophy that students should be educated beyond technical knowledge and skills -- that to be prepared for the rapidly changing information industry, one needs to understand the foundational principles on which it lies, and to appreciate the complete information system both from the digital side and from the human side. Thus, the MSIS Program offers several options to carefully target your studies. For those not ready to specialize, the School allows you to design a course of study under the direction of your advisor that meets your individual needs, while conforming to the general distribution guidelines found in the MSIS Course of Study. Many students use this option to sample multiple areas of the curriculum, while other students focus on a defined area of specialization, such as Cognitive Systems, Human Computer Interaction, or Technology and Society.

Tracks of Study (Optional)

The following tracks of study are for students who wish to fine tune the MSIS requirements toward certain specializations. Students should meet with a faculty advisor to design a suitable set of courses -- students are not required to choose a track.

Areas of Focus

The School also offers students the chance to tailor their studies on several areas of focus:
