Display Case News
This summer, the display cases outside of the Information Sciences Library spotlight some of the most spectacular libraries on Earth. The inspiration for this display, The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World (Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 2003), features photographs by Guillaume de Laubier and text by Jacques Bosser. As James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, writes in the book's Foreword, "Whether dazzlingly decorated or austere in design, all libraries provide an insight into the culture that brings them into being." With this in mind, one display photo was chosen to represent each of the twenty-three libraries that are included in the book. The photos and their accompanying captions capture the mood and spirit of libraries in Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, England, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal, the United States, and Russia. For example, the Vatican Library's tradition of frescoes, opulent decor, and cabinets that "hide" the collection are all represented in the photo of the library's reading room. Likewise, the photo of the Mazarine Libary in Paris, France, illustrates the balance of scholarliness and luxury that one can sense in the main hall of the library.
Whether these pictures provide inspiration for an impending job hunt or simply fill a study break with memorable images, take a moment for a "virtual tour" of these incredible libraries and the nations that they represent. Better yet, page through The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World. The I.S. Library has a circulating copy of the book; its call number is Z679 L37 2003.
Several noteworthy local libraries are also featured on one of the display bulletin boards. Labels on a map of Pittsburgh indicate the location of:
Copies of pamphlets containing background information, hours, and driving directions for these libraries are incorporated into the display. Please take one of each for your "Places to Visit" file!
