Did You Know?
Now You Do!
Welcome to returning students and
to students new to DLIS this term!
Here are some factoids that might come in handy during the course of the
semester ...
- If you haven't already, you
will want to sign up for the MLIS listserv. Just visit
http://www.sis.pitt.edu/resources/mailing_list.html for instructions.
- DLIS student mailboxes (located outside
Room 650) will be assigned shortly following the Add/Drop period. Check the list on the wall for your box
number.

- There are graduate student lockers on the 4th
and 6th floors. Bring your own lock!
- Library and Information Science Job Hunting
Resources are available online at
http://www.sis.pitt.edu/~lsdept/libjobs.htm. Also look for the Local Job
Postings bulletin boards on the 6th Floor. National and International job
postings are in the I.S. Library; ask at the reference desk.
- The IS Library offers several instructional
programs every week on PITTCat, the ULS homepage, Library DB's and full text,
among others. Check out the calendar at
http://www.library.pitt.edu:8100/cgi-bin/cals/webevent.cgi?cmd=opencal&cal=cal12
or sign up on the bulletin boards outside the library.
- The first day to register for the Summer 2004
term is Monday, February 16. Fall 2004 registration is not far behind,
beginning on March 18, 2004. Mark your calendars!
- Spring Break runs from Monday, March 8 to
Friday, March 12.
- You can get a student membership to the
American Library Association for $25 a year. See the ALA's Membership page at
http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=Membership .
- LIS students are welcome to attend DLIS faculty
meetings, held on the first Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be
held on Wednesday, February 4, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 501. Contact Marcy Walls
at mwalls@mail.sis.pitt.edu for
dates, times, and locations.
- As Pitt students, 900 pages of free printing
are available to us each semester at Hillman Library and other campus
computing labs. This is very helpful to know for those times when the I.S. 8th
Floor computer lab is closed, booked for a class, or otherwise unavailable.
Computer labs are located in Benedum Hall, the Cathedral of Learning, David
Lawrence Hall, Posvar Hall, Sutherland Hall, and Alumni Hall. For more
information, visit
http://technology.pitt.edu/students/complabs.html.
- Software is available at no charge to students,
including Microsoft Office and Frontpage - available for both Macintosh and
PCs. Students can pick up a copy of the software at any campus
computing lab upon presentation of a valid University ID.
- The Pitt Technology Help Desk is available
around the clock at 412-624-HELP.
- Looking for a parking space before class should
not be the most challenging part of your day! The First Baptist Church (on
Bigelow between Ruskin and North Bellefield) has a parking lot that's as
convenient as can be to the I.S. Building. Teris Parking is well-lit 24-hours
a day, and rates are: $3 for 1 hour; $5 for 1-3 hours; $7 for 3-6 hours. This
lot does not offer in/out privileges. Some proceeds benefit the church.
- Pitt's Division of Student Affairs posts a
Student Resource Guide at
http://www.studentaffairs.pitt.edu/resource.html. This is a great resource
for those important but miscellaneous issues such as ID's, name changes,
transportation, and volunteering opportunities.
If you know something that we don't, please
