Baja Fresh Mexican Grill |
|
Those of you who crave the flavors of Mexico will be happy to know about Baja Fresh, which opened on Forbes Avenue this past fall. Baja Fresh is perfect when you're looking for a fast lunch or supper that isn't "fast food." Their menu boasts that they have no freezers, no microwaves, and no can openers, and their delicious food backs this claim. Order-at-the-counter convenience and a well-stocked salsa bar (complete with cilantro and lime wedges) will help make this one of your favorite restaurants.
Here are some of the highlights from the large, varied menu:
Enchiladas Verdes ($5.95) are two corn tortillas stuffed with your choice of chicken, veggies, or cheese, topped with salsa verde and served up with a side of Mexican rice and beans. The salsa verde adds a light, tangy flavor to this traditional favorite, and the rice and beans on the side promise that you won't go away hungry. It's even better topped off with salsa bar fixin's such as the baja salsa, a smoky roasted tomato salsa.
The Grilled Vegetarian Burrito ($5.25) is a huge flour tortilla, stuffed with grilled peppers and onions, your choice of pinto or black beans, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream. For $1.75 extra, you can make your burrito "Enchilada Style," smothered in Enchilada Salsa and cheese with a side of chips (also smothered in sauce and cheese!). I recommend skipping the lettuce, as it makes things a bit soggy, but overall this is a tasty and very hearty meal.
Baja Fish Tacos ($2.25 a piece) are fresh, lightly breaded fish rolled in a corn tortilla with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, and a tangy baja-style dressing. You may think that fish tacos sound strange, but I guarantee that one bite will make you a convert of this California-style treat. These are extra yummy with a hit of lime juice! And you can order as few or as many as you're in the mood for.
One note of caution: this might not be the lunch spot for you if you need to put in a long afternoon and evening of studying. The stick-to-your-ribs food runs the risk of being nap-inducing. Luckily, a Starbucks is located right across the street ...
