Fajita Grill in Shadyside: Muy sabrosa y picosa.
By Leslie J. Patterson
For authentic Mexican food in a stylish setting try Fajita Grill in Shadyside. Housed in a charmingly renovated row house, the restaurant features two cozy dining rooms on the first and second floors. The eclectic interior is decorated in warm yellows and crimson with prints of Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo paintings. The glowing atmosphere is as perfect for a first date as it is for a meal with the family.
Vegetarians will revel in the menu which offers several meatless entrees, including Huevos Rancheros and Smoked Chipolte Tofu. Start your meal off with a basket of freshly made chips and the mild yet tangy red salsa. Although Fajita Grill doesn’t serve alcohol, bottles of wine can be brought in for a cork fee. Warm up your palate with a bowl of soup; the Black Bean soup is a spicy blend of beans, onions, cilantro and tomato served with melted cheese. Then choose from the large menu.
I had the burrito with grilled vegetables and beans. Baked under a melted layer of Monterey Jack cheese the burritos were drenched in delicious cilantro-infused green sauce. The grilled vegetables were flavorful and tender although the beans were a bit dry. The burritos were spicy but not too hot and can be ordered with your choice of salsas.
Top your meal off with coffee and dessert, perhaps the Flan or the Pear Tart. Or you could try the Sopapillas, fried tortillas with ice cream and honey. Fajita Grill is a rare combination of authentic Mexican fare combined with good atmosphere and should not be passed up! Entrees start at $8.50.
