Did you know?
(We didn't either...)

Revised and Reprinted from the January 2003 Issue.

Welcome, of course, to the returning students, but particularly to the new students beginning the program this summer term. Good luck, nice to have you here, and here are some factoids that might come in handy your first weeks as a DLIS graduate student:
  • Janie Weaver, Assistant to the Department Chair, welcomes your DLIS questions and concerns. Email her at jweaver@mail.sis.pitt.edu or call her at (412) 624-3988.
  • The first day to register for the Fall 2003 term was March 13. Spring 2004 term registration begins November 23. Register early, register often.
  • Our next vacation day is July 4.  Enjoy the fireworks!
  • The 12 week summer classes end Friday, August 1.  The six week I classes end Friday, June 20.  Six week II classes run Monday, June 23 to Friday, August 1.
  • A graduation luncheon for August 2003 graduates will be held Thursday, July 24.  Invitations will be mailed by the end of June. Contact Tricia on the 5th floor with questions (412-624-2746).
  • The 6th floor Local Job Postings bulletin boards are on the wall opposite Room 633 and 633A.  National Job Postings can be found in the black binders located behind the circulation desk in the SIS library.  For more information on job hunt help, check out the Bibliofile job hunt links located on our site.
  • There are graduate student lockers on the 4th and 6th floors. BYOL (bring your own lock).
  • DLIS field placement application forms are available online at http://www.sis.pitt.edu/~lsdept/intern.htm#fpforms .
  • The IS Library offers individual assistance with research papers and projects.  Drop in to schedule a consultation.
  • Each semester SIS students can apply for funding to attend professional conferences. Visit the Professional Conference Guidelines webpage at http://www2.sis.pitt.edu/resources/student_to_conferences.html for more information.
  • You can get a student membership to the ALA for $25 a year. Once at http://www.ala.org, go to "Our Association" and then the "membership" link buried in the text.  Once you are a member, check out the student organizations you can join here at SIS.
  • The ALA Annual Conference will be held in Toronto, ON from June 19-25, 2003.  For more information, check out the Conference Preview article.   Pitt students ride all Port Authority Buses for free.  True, they don't always run on schedule, but it can be better than trying to find parking in Oakland.  Check out the other things your Pitt ID can do for you in this October Bibliofile article: http://www2.sis.pitt.edu/%7Ebiblio/archives/ID10-31-02.html.
  • There is a United States Postal Service office within the Mellon Institute (the building with the big columns, on the corner of Bellefield and Fifth Ave.).  Enter the side door facing Bellefield. Turn immediately to the right and go to the last door on the left. The post office is through that door, in the general shipping area. There is also a post office inside the Carnegie Public Main Library. Turn left once inside the second set of doors.
Tell us if there's something you know that we don't. Please contact us with your ideas: biblio@mail.sis.pitt.edu .
